Goodbye The Dark Leaves, welcome back matt pond PA

Mr. Matthew Pond

Mr. Matthew Pond

So I have to correct my previous post about matt pond PA, my favorite band. They are not going through any kind of pseudo breakup, but rather fighting the good fight as plain old matt pond PA. This according to the affable Mike at Altitude Records:

I have been fielding calls and e-mails from nervous fans wondering about the status of matt pond PA. MATT POND PA HAS NOT BROKEN UP! In fact, the band is in the studio this summer working on new material, of which there is plenty! The band is doing all of their own recording and mixing this time around (guitarist/keyboardist Chris Hansen is a seasoned studio engineer), and the songs I have heard so far are bright, clear and gorgeous, if I may say so myself. If all goes according to plan, you can look for some new songs as early as this fall!

Great news! The Dark Leaves did have a MySpace page, but it has since been removed. Glad to hear it. I didn’t like the name The Dark Leaves, anyway.

Measure 3 – matt pond PA

Goodbye, matt pond PA. hello, The Dark Leaves.

One of my favorite bands is breaking up. Well, sort of. Matt Pond has announced that his 10 year musical project, matt pond PA, will cease, but will be reborn as The Dark Leaves later this year. Glad these guys will still be making music, but sad to hear of the remote possibility that The Dark Leaves won’t play mpPA songs any longer.

According to the Isthmus Daily Page:

Pond has suggested the Dark Leaves may not play Matt Pond PA songs anymore. And that would be a lot of songs to leave behind. The band has released eight CDs that have been beloved by some and belittled by others, but ignored by few.

I’ll post a best-of Matt Pond mix later this week.

matt pond PA: at my college’s bar

So I’ve learned from Fro that one of my long-standing favorite bands (diehard through their various lineups and equipment thefts), matt pond PA, will appear at McPhail’s – my college’s on-campus bar. Now I’m not sure what this says about either my school or matt pond, but I wish the best to both. I’ll be in attendance:

matt pond PA
McPhails – Providence College
Saturday, January 28
8 p.m.

Check out this multi-angle deliciousness from a show in Detroit last year:

And some tunes for the Friday morning crew:

matt pond PA – Closest (Look Out)
John Vanderslice – Numbered Lithograph
Destroyer –  Priest’s Knees

My shoes are wet

Today was Boston’s first snow day of any relevance, and, like an idiot, I wore a wool peacoat and dress shoes. So I’m sure it was a sight to see me ambling down the street, soaked up to my shins, wildly swinging eggs and milk from CVS in one hand and a 6-pack of Blue Moon’s Full Moon Winter Ale in the other in a desperate attempt to maintain balance.

I’ll offer the following in honor of snow:
First, if only the Cardinals were as metal as Ryan Adams makes them look in this song:

Secondly, a killer version of that song is available below:

The Sun Also Sets – Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

Thirdly, some great songs for snow:
Snow Day – matt pond PA
At Dawn – My Morning Jacket
Honest – The Long Winters
Dreams in the Hollows – Jesca Hoop

Like the music you see here? Please support the artists. I like a lot of bands/singers/musicians who who don't get to enjoy the mega-success handed to less than qualified artists by major labels. So do your part; see a show, buy an album (c'mon, with iTunes it couldn't be easier), or at least visit their websites. Thanks. Oh, and if you represent one of these artists and want me to take a link down, please leave a comment and I'll honor your request.
